Effects of Anaerobiosis on Budbreak in Grapevine Cuttings

Abstract
Effects of anaerobiosis (anoxia) on days to budbreak and 2 §¯-growth along with percentages of budbreak and cuttings of ¡Ã2 §¯-growth of ¢¥Black Olympia¢¥, ¢¥Fujiminori¢¥, and ¢¥Sheridan¢¥ grapevine cuttings were studied. Anaerobiosis was effective for budbreak in ¢¥Black Olympia¢¥, hastening the days to budbreak for 7-9 days while reduction in days to 2 §¯-growth for 6 days was shown only with 24 h treatment. Days to budbreak and 2 §¯-growth of ¢¥Fujiminori¢¥ were reduced by anaerobiosis for respective 5-11 days and 13-16 days. Soaking for 24 h was most effective, and days to budbreak and 2 §¯-growth were increased with the prolonged treatment. Days to budbreak and 2 §¯-growth of ¢¥Sheridan¢¥ were hastened by anaerobiosis for respective 16-18 days and 13-19 days, and 24 h- and 48 h-soaking were more effective. Increase in respective percentages of budbreak and cuttings of ¡Ã2 §¯-growth of ¢¥Black Olympia¢¥ were 7-12% and 9-15%, both showing the proportional increase with soaking time. In ¢¥Fujiminori¢¥ cuttings, percentages of budbreak and cuttings of ¡Ã2 §¯-growth decreased with the duration of anaerobiosis. Anaerobiosis increased the percent budbreak by 3-9% while percent cuttings of ¡Ã2 §¯-growth was either increased (10%) or, due to the cessation of subsequent growth, decreased (8%) by respective 24 h and 72 h anaerobiosis. Overall percent budbreak of ¢¥Sheridan¢¥ was increased by anaerobiosis, resulting in practically complete budbreak of 13% increase with 24 h treatment, and 48 h- and 72 h-soaking resulted in 7-8% increase. Effect of anaerobiosis on percent cuttings of ¡Ã2 §¯-growth was more apparent, resulting in 17% increase with 24 h-treatment and 13% increase with 48 h- and 72 h-treatments.
